Van's Bio

Former Secretary Van T. Mitchell joined Cornerstone Government Affairs as a consultant in September 2017. Prior to joining Cornerstone, he served at the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene under two administrations. First, as Principal Deputy Secretary from 2004 to 2007 and then as Secretary from January 2015 through December 2016. During his tenure, he managed the Department’s budget of over $13 billion dollars and nine thousand employees. He spent eight years as a government relations specialist for Manis Canning & Associates.

Van was a member of the Maryland House of Delegates, serving Charles County for three terms from 1995 – 2004. During his tenure in the legislature, he sat on both the Economic Matters and Appropriations Committees. During this time, he was a member of the Unemployment Insurance Subcommittee; Real Property Subcommittee; House Chair of the Workers’ Compensation Subcommittee; House Chair Workers’ Compensation Benefit and Insurance Oversight Committee; Joint Committee on Administrative, Executive and Legislative Review; member Capital Budget Subcommittee; Oversight Committee on Pensions; Chair of the Health and Human Resources Subcommittee; House Chair Joint Audit Committee; and Chaired both the Charles County and Southern Maryland Delegations.

Van has served on many boards including the University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center (formerly Civista Medical Center), College of Southern Maryland Board of Trustees and Co-Founder and Vice Chair of the Board of County First Bank. Van currently serves on The Wills Group Board of Trustees and MSI, Inc.

Van was born in La Plata, MD. He is the sixth generation of his family to grow up in Charles County. He is the President and CEO of MSI, Inc. which formerly operated a building supply company in Charles County, MD for over 49 years. Van currently lives in La Plata with his wife, Julie, and has two grown daughters. Van attended Campbell University.
